Let’s hear it for the Music Department at Island School and piano students of Rose Alfiler, who nearly packed the house at the Kaua’i Community College Performing Arts Center Tuesday evening.
The lively presentation was directed by Philip A. Steinbacher and accompanied by Alfiler.
Made up mostly by beaming proud parents, the show kicked off with the sweet twangs, freshly-learned chord progressions and arpeggios by the piano students of Rose Alfiler.
Some of the students, such as Maria Grigorova, 9, benefited from all the practice in preparation for the recital and was thrilled to have made “no mistakes” for the performance.
It took months of preparation for the “When we sing…” presentation, which also featured the Island School Chorus, Island School ‘Opio Chorus, Island School Keiki Chorus and Island School Singers.
Highlights of the evening included the Latin American calypso song “Shake the Papaya Down,” a violin-accompanied “Eleanor Rigby” and a special Mother’s Day tribute to moms everywhere, “The Mom Song.”
The latter of the three proved humorous and tearful for the moms of music students who were called up to the stage to enjoy the moment of being serenaded by their keiki.
