PO‘IPU — Sandra Akita was named All-Around Cowgirl at the Kaua‘i All Girl Rodeo Association event last Sunday after marking in all six events at the CJM Country Stables in Po‘ipu.
Akita teamed with Shantel Wong and Joyce Miranda to net first and fourth places, respectively, in a Team Roping event that was peppered with excitement when Alexis Vasconcelles’ steed was spooked when the roped steer managed to tangle the rope between the horse and its tail, causing the horse to throw its rider.
With Wong heeling, the Akita/Wong team topped the event on a 10.36/1, and with Miranda heeling, the pair stopped the clock at 16.15/1 in the event that saw the steers winning following the first of two attempts. The announcer said there was only a 26 percent catch rate following the first go.
Akita also pocked a pair of second-place finishes, the first in the first D of the 3D Pole Bending event where she completed the course in 23.234 over the challenge of third place finisher Vasconcelles (23.952). Her second event saw Akita hold off another strong challenge in the Goat Tying event, Akita stopping the clocks at 28.770 over Michelle Ientile’s 28.894 for third place.
Akita also marked fifth in the first D of the 3D Barrel Racing event, stopping the clock at 18.736, just a shade under the fourth place go of Tierra Rapozo (18.623), and marked fifth in Breakaway Roping on a go of 22.74.
Coralyn Murayama, topping the Steer Undecorating event on a blazing 5.83 go, added a third finish (25.301) in the second D of 3D Pole Bending, and a fourth finish in the Goat Tying (30.310) to earn Reserve All-Around honors with 27 points.
Akita’s All-Around honors earned her 48 points in the standings.
