High five for the nearly 200 folks and their furry friends who showed up last week Saturday at the Kapa‘a multi-use path to show support for the right to fully utilize the path together.
We checked it out and saw many well-behaved dogs, leading the way to show lawmakers that dogs are an important part of community life, and that dogs are a significant part of our ‘ohana.
An 18-month trial period allowing dogs on the path started on Dec. 1, 2008, which means that on May 31 the community could lose the privilege. The trial period allowed dogs only on the portion of the path between the Lihi Boat Ramp and the southernmost pavilion at Kealia Beach.
But all good things don’t have to come to an end. There’s a bill right now that would permanently allow responsible dog-owners to walk their dogs on the path.
The Kaua‘i Humane Society organized the dog walk. Impressively, even with around 200 four-legged friends, the walk was more peaceful and well-behaved than most human-only events. After all, in dog we trust.
