Volunteers are being sought to help create handicapped-accessible living space from a garage for Kalani Hillstrom, 35-year-old ALS patient, husband, and father of three children. Volunteers are also needed to help sell raffle tickets to raise money for the garage conversion and for Hillstrom’s continuing medical care.
The converted living space with bathroom will allow Hillstrom to use an electric wheelchair and remain with his family as he loses mobility, something not currently possible in his small home. General contractor and project management help is needed, as well as materials and supplies, labor, subcontractors, and cash for permits and other expenses.
Raffle tickets will be sold for $10 each. Three different vacations have been donated for one-week apiece at the Las Vegas Hilton, a 100-year-old house on the east shore on Kaua‘i, and a house in Moloa‘a. Additional vacation units are also being sought by local donors which can be made available in the drawing, which is slated to be held June 27 at Hanama‘ulu Beach Park.
Hillstrom was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) in 2008. At present he cannot talk, can only use one finger on his left hand, and is slowly losing mobility in his legs. He is fed through a stomach tube.
