LIHU‘E —Waimea’s Torrey Santiago finished with two state berths after the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Track and Field Standards were revised April 5.
Those were the only two state field events at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation qualifying meet Friday at Vidinha Stadium.
In addition to Santiago, the boys earned two consideration achievements and the girls earned three consideration achievements.
Santiago leaped 22-01.00 for a first finish in the Boys Long Jump, bettering the state standard of 21-01.25. His other state berth came with a first finish in the Boys Triple Jump with a leap of 43-10.00, bettering the state standard of 42-06.25.
Fellow Menehune leaper Malcolm Carter finished second in the triple jump on a leap of 41-06.25, exceeding the state consideration standard of 40-05.50.
Kapa‘a’s Darren Taylor finished second in the long jump on a leap of 19-10.25, missing the state consideration of 19-10.5 by a mere quarter inch.
Kaua‘i’s Michael Kahoekapu-Cruz topped the Boys Discus Throw on a heft of 138-07, bettering the state consideration standard of 136-01.
Kaua‘i’s Reanna Javinar topped the Girls Triple Jump on a leap of 33-01.50, bettering the state consideration standard of 32-06.75.
Kaua‘i’s Uila Langi finished first in two events, the Girls Shot Put and the Girls Discus Throw, both events earning consideration nods.
Langi put the shot at 33-09.00, exceeding the consideration standard of 32-00.25, and threw the discus 103-11, bettering the consideration standard of 94-04.
KIF track and field athletes will be attempting to fit into the revised standards when the Rotary Clubs host its annual meet, Thursday at Vidinha Stadium starting at 4:30 p.m.
There is no charge to view this competition, or the final qualifying meet next week.
There will be an admission fee to enter the KIF Championship meet scheduled for later this month.
