LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i High School tennis players swept Waimea with the boys (5-0) and girls (5-0) teams taking all their matches Saturday at the Kaua‘i Lagoons tennis courts.
The second set of matches in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation tennis program saw the Island School boys down Kapa‘a 5-0 and the Island School girls edge out the Warriors 3-2. Kapa‘a singles players took their respective matches while Island School took all of the doubles matches, including the consolation match where sisters Lauren and Joy Claypoole teamed to defeat the Kapa‘a duo of Candice Miner Ching and Lauren Pang 8-3.
In the absence of its No. 1 Boys Singles player, Chas Okamoto, the Warriors fell, but not without giving a battle as the second and third boys doubles matches went into long fights.
Elliott Haigh and Ryan Lopez of the Warriors, playing on the No. 2 Boys Doubles court, gave Island School’s Dylan Morrison-Fogel and Ben Steuri a handful before dropping 6-2, 6-7(7-5).
Similarly, the No. 3 Boys Doubles team of Reggie Agaran and Jarrod Shinn dragged their match against Island School to three sets before dropping to Kyle Lee and Charlie Hernot, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Kapa‘a’s Girls No. 1 Doubles team of Kaylie Nakamura and Jazzerie Taeza dragged out their battle against the Island School pair of Meghan Perius and Madison Duarte, but could not keep the Warrior string of wins going, dropping 6-7(7-2), 6-2 to the Voyagers.
Over at the Kaua‘i Lagoons tennis courts, prom was the topic of the day as play was pushed up to accomodate proms being celebrated by both Kaua‘i and Waimea high schools.
Shay Orial worked hard to take Brittney Barreira, 7-6(7-4), 6-4, repeating the scenario at the Hanapepe courts where the Kaua‘i No. 2 Girls Singles player worked for her advantage.
Waimea’s Dessa Rentrop, teaming with Chantelle Carveiro in the Girls No. 2 Doubles, was the only team to win against Kaua‘i in Hanapepe.
But on Saturday, Rentrop teamed with Rachel Umetsu in the Girls No. 1 Doubles and Carveiro teamed with Miriam Corpuz in the Girls No. 2 Doubles, both teams dropping against the Raiders.
The Girls No. 3 Doubles team of Jaimee Gali and Kristine Castillo took their match to three sets before getting past Waimea’s Annalisa Hartsell and Shantel Rita, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.
One final round remains in the KIF season before the players compete in the state qualifying tournament.
Waimea hosts Kapa‘a this Saturday at the Hanapepe Tennis Courts starting at 9 a.m. to accomodate Kapa‘a’s prom. Island School hosts Kaua‘i at the Kaua‘i Community College tennis courts starting at noon.
The state qualifying tournament will be played in Po‘ipu April 22-23.
