WAILUA — While some 200 walkers in the March for Babies took off down the multi-use path, Bruce Netzer was busy unloading equipment behind the storage facility at Lydgate Park.
“The rubbish is back,” he said, moving a wheelbarrow into place for volunteers. “With the heavy rains earlier in the week, the wood is back. Hopefully, we’ll have enough volunteers turning out to clear it in one day.”
Vegetative debris washed down by runoff in the Wailua River lined the water’s edge at the popular Morgan’s Ponds at Lydgate as it does during times of heavy rains with strong tradewinds and high surf.
“This is not as bad as some of the other times so we’re hoping we can clear it up in one day,” said Netzer, garbed in a specially designed “Beach Cleanup Team” shirt.
Thomas Noyes of Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park said volunteers will pile the accumulated debris along the shoreline and if the work can’t be completed in a day, it’ll be completed during the Earth Day project on Saturday.
“I’ll be there with the Rotary Club of Kapa‘a,” said Ray Carpenter, a walker with the March for Babies. “The Rotary Club is teaming up with the Interact Club of Kapa‘a High School for Earth Day to repaint the restrooms on the south end of the park.”
Noyes said volunteers are welcome to join the Friends of Kamalani and Lydgate Park from 7:30 a.m. to noon, Saturday to help spruce up the park and Kamalani Playground.
Volunteers are asked to bring water bottles, work gloves, sun protection and shoes. Lunch will be served once the work is completed.
