LIHU‘E — The Hawaiian Surfing Federation Kaua‘i/YMCA held its fourth and final surf contest of the 2009-10 season on April 3-4 at Kealia Beach to determine who will be heading to the upcoming Hawai‘i State Championships, May 6-8 at Ala Moana Bowls in Honolulu.
Surfers in all divisions take their top three point totals of the four-event season to create their final standing, with the top six in each category eligible to head to O‘ahu to compete with other island surfers for a state crown.
The Menehune Shortboard division was contested by just two young riders, with Mainei Kinimaka coming in first place and Kai McIntrye finshing second. Those two finish the season as the top two in the Menehune division, with Kuio Young, Kainehe Hunt, Hunter Cabral and Luke McCullough rounding out the top six.
In Boys Shortboard, Luke Hitchcock won his third event of the season, topping the division for the year. Kalen Galtes, Dorian Blanchard and Tablin Shamblin rounded out the top four, all qualifying for states. Lucas Angulo and Daniel Carter also will be eligible to go to O‘ahu.
Jesse Guglielmana took home the Junior Shortboard division, his second win of the season. Elliott Leon finished second, Roy Carvalho was third and Christian Graham, fourth. Guglielmana, Leon and Graham all put themselves in the top six, along with Kaimana Jaquias, Gavin Klein and Luke Hitchcock.
The Open Men’s Shortboard was won by Chatson Barrett, his second victory in his four events. Barrett finished no worse than second all season.
Aaron Swanson was second, Nathan Carvalho, third, and Kyle Galtes fourth. Barrett, Swanson and Galtes made it into the top six for the year, as did Jaquias, Klein and Guglielmana.
Swanson took first in the 4-A Open division, finishing second for the season. Klein, Nathan Carvalho and Troy Weston Webb followed in the top four. Swanson, Klein, Guglielmana, Keola Carreira, Kyle Maligro and Barrett will be state eligible in 4-A.
The Senior Men was won by Richard Patay, in his only competition of the season. Kyle Maligro was second, while Hans Schiffer and Russell Lewis took third and fourth, respectively. Maligro, Patay, Ed Yanagihara, Miguel Graham, Schiffer and Les Tabuchi are all eligible for states.
Girls Shortboard was won by Tatiana Weston-Webb, her second straight victory, clinching the top spot for the season. Lianna Patey came in second place, followed by Shania Weiss and Maluhia Kinimaka. Those four, along with Mainei Kinimaka and Kianna Fores made the year’s top six.
The Girls Longboard was also won by Weston-Webb, with Patey taking another second. Fores finished third and Natalia Smith took fourth. Jericho Paliracio and Weiss will join those four with state eligibility.
Gavin Klein won the Men’s Longboard, with Warwick Gray taking second. Jericho Paliracio, Tabuchi and Christian Potter round out the season standings.
Keanu Malama won his third straight Boys Bodyboard competition and Eli Duar took his third straight second place. Daniel Carter and Tabin Shamblin rounded out the top four, all qualifying for states, as did Rad Kai Floria.
Matthew Holzman made it back-to-back wins in Junior Bodyboarding, finishing first for the season. Kaimana Wong was second, followed by Travis Smith in third and Storm Magsanay in fourth. Holzman, Wong, Magnasay, Kainoa French, Phillip Topp and Michael Raithaus completed the season’s top six.
Matthew Ives got his first win in the Standup Paddleboard division, taking first place for the season. Nephi Quereto was second, Kawika Carvalho in third and Mitchell Alapa in fourth. All four are state eligible, along with Dwayne Akau and Jeremy Fry.
