LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation baseball game between Kaua‘i and Waimea High Schools at Vidinha Stadium was rained out, Wednesday.
Ross Shimabukuro, athletic director for Kaua‘i High School, announced the reguarly-scheduled game was cancelled due to flooding in the infield of the baseball diamond at the Vidinha Stadium complex.
“The game won’t be played unless it has a bearing on the standings later in the season,” Shimabukuro said, shortly after 11 a.m., Wednesday.
The next scheduled KIF baseball game will unfold Saturday morning when the Kapa‘a Warriors travel to Hanapepe Stadium for a doubleheader against Waimea starting at 10 a.m.
Shimabukuro said the weather would not affect the KIF boys volleyball game played at Kaua‘i High School, Wednesday night.
The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued a flood advisory for Kaua‘i at 11:30 a.m. when rain gauges around the island displayed heavy rain falling at the rate of an inch an hour at several of the sites.
Earlier in the day, the NWS issued a flash flood watch for the Hawaiian Islands effective through Thursday morning.
The flash flood watch was issued because a trough is projected to keep the atmosphere unstable through early this morning, and with abundant low level moisture, locally heavy rainfall may develop as the Islands heat up during the daylight hours.
Heavy rains in the early morning hours Wednesday also caused debris to be washed over portions of Rice Street in Lihu‘e in an area just above the entrance to the Kaua‘i Marriott Resort, resulting in portions of the road to be limited in traffic with the Kaua‘i Police Department using its patrol vehicles to control the traffic in the affected areas.
State Department of Transportation Highways crews later mitigated that damage.
