PUHI — Island School tennis players put up a strong challenge before dropping to Waimea, 3-2 in the boys matches and 4-1 in the girls matches at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation tennis played at the Kaua‘i Community College courts Saturday.

Sam Dunham of Island School opened strong with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Waimea’s Joshua Ponting in the Boys No. 1 Singles followed by Ryan Perez, playing on the Boys No. 2 Singles court, defeated Bryce Rivera, 6-4, 6-2.
But following the 2-0 wins in the Boys Singles, Island School boys doubles teams could only take the Boys No. 1 Doubles when Jeremy Randolph-Flagg teamed with Logan Domingo to get past the Menehune duo of Chris Ajimura and Andrew Dutton.
John Villanueva teamed with John Gawaran on the Boys No. 2 Doubles court to defeat the Island pair 6-0, 5-7, 6-4. Mark Razalan and Benigno Baclig of Waimea teamed against Kyle Lee and Charlie Hernot on the Boys No. 3 Doubles court to prevail 8-6, 6-2.
Island School got its only win in the girls arena when Meghan Perius and Sara Loreti, playing the Girls No. 1 Doubles, defeated the Menehune pair of Rachel Umetsu and Dessa Rentrop.
Jade Cano, playing the Girls No. 1 Singles, downed Island School’s Madison Duarte, 6-0, 6-0, and Brittney Barreira of Waimea defeated Island’s April Oo, 6-2, 6-0 on the Girls No. 2 Singles court.
Following the loss in the No. 1 Girls Doubles, Waimea came back to take the No. 2 Girls Doubles when Miriam Corpuz teamed with Chantelle Carveiro to edge out the Island School duo of Haley Uliana and Stephanie Steuri, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0.
Waimea’s Annalissa Hartsell and Brittney Palencia teamed on the Girls No. 3 Doubles court to defeat the Island pair of Kathryn Hoban and Kaulana Hannenberg 6-4, 6-3.
Island School travels to Kapa‘a this Saturday starting at 10 a.m. while Waimea travels to the Kaua‘i Lagoons courts against Kaua‘i starting at 9 a.m.
