LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The University of Hawai‘i softball team (27-11, 5-0 WAC) launched a total of eight home runs in Saturday’s two Western Athletic Conference games and held off hard-hitting New Mexico State (17-15, WAC 0-5) to sweep the series-opening doubleheader, 9-8 and 14-3, according to a press release from the UH athletic department.
UH’s Stephanie Ricketts and Kaia Parnaby both earned complete game wins, while Katie Grimes led the home run barrage with three homers at the NMSU Softball Complex.
Kaua‘i’s Jessica Iwata, the ‘Bows’ freshman shortstop, went 5 for 10 on the day with a homer, a double, five runs and an RBI.
Iwata is now hitting .346 on the season, with six home runs, a team-high 13 doubles, 22 RBIs and 31 runs scored. She is slugging .644 and has an on-base percentage of .414.
The series continues today with a single game at NMSU, before the team moves on for a three-game series at Utah State on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Baseball game incomplete
The UH men’s baseball team did not finish its game against Gonzaga in time for the Sunday edition.
As of press time, UH trailed 7-3 in the eighth inning.
