Kaua‘i High School No. 1 boys golfer Pono Tokioka finished the 2010 Mokihana Cup with a 2-over par 74 to top the 15-18 Championship flight.
Kapa‘a golfer Justin Uegawa followed six strokes off the pace at 80 and Weston Moniz, strong in Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf play, filled in third place, according to submitted standings.
Sean Mamaclay, turning in his season-best KIF round last week, filled in fourth.
The Mokihana Cup must have been the turning point for Mamaclay who, in teaming with Hi‘ilani Rosa-Alana for the 3-Hole Divots in the Dark tournament, March 26, topped the winners list with a 14, a stroke better than the duo of Tokioka and Jenae Park, which finished at 15, tied with Levi Miyashiro and Reece Valencia.
Those two tournaments were just two hosted by the Kaua‘i Junior Golf Association within the last two weeks, said Ron Peeren, Tournament Chair for the KJGA.
“Our first tournament was the Mokihana Cup which was played on the Kaua‘i Lagoons golf course, an 18-hole stroke play tournament,” Peeren said in an e-mail. “The younger Juniors played on March 20 and the 13-18 Juniors played on March 21.”
The popular Divots in the Dark tournament was played March 26 at the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course, Peeren said.
“We have a 3-Hole Tournament for ‘course ready Juniors’ and an 18-Hole Putting Tournament for new Juniors,” the KJGA Tournament Chair said.
The 2010 3-Hole Tournament featured 12 teams of two players each with the players alternating shots.
“The scores were amazing with first place shooting 14 for the three holes at Po‘ipu Bay,” Peeren said. “Par for these three holes is 12.”
Mamaclay and Rosa-Alana took the event, which was played at night using glow balls.
A three-way tie between Sharae Cua, Matthew Nishimoto and Kamuela Thain topped the 18-Hole Putting Tournament with just under 80 Junior and 140 parents and siblings enjoying the evening in Po‘ipu.
The next KJGA tournament is the Menehune Junior Championship scheduled for April 24-25 at the Puakea Golf Course.
The 12 and Under Juniors tee off starting at noon April 24 and the 13-18 Juniors tee off starting at noon April 25. Both days will have a Rules Session preceding play.
