MALIBU, Calif. — The No. 2 Pepperdine men’s volleyball team won for the 12th time in its last 13 matches with a three-game sweep (30-26, 34-32, 30-26) of No. 5 Hawai‘i in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play, Friday night in Firestone Fieldhouse, according to a release provided by the Pepperdine athletic department.
The Waves (13-5, 11-4) and the Warriors (14-8, 10-7) continue their two-match series tonight at 4 p.m. HT.
Hawai‘i was led by Jonas Umlauft’s 20 kills, while Matt Rawson and Joshua Walker had 11 kills apiece.
Pepperdine never trailed in the first game, and led by as many as four points, first at 17-13 and last at 20-16. But UH eventually tied it at 21-21 and 22-22. The Waves then went on a 4-0 run and Hawai‘i got no closer than two points the rest of the way.
The second game featured 13 ties and 10 lead changes and the Waves needed a remarkable comeback to take a 2-0 lead. Hawai‘i led by four at 28-24, before the Waves’ comeback bid resulted in a win.
Pepperdine let a decent-sized lead get away in the third game, but once again finished strong. Tied 26-26, the Waves got a kill and three straight blocks to end the match.
