KAPA‘A — Kaua‘i bats came alive in the fifth inning as the Raiders pushed four runs across the plate en route to a 14-7 win over Kapa‘a, under the Wednesday lights at the New Kapa‘a Town Park.
Kapa‘a, playing with a noticeable improvement in its play, proved to be a worthy opponent of the Red Raiders who are rebounding from a loss suffered to Waimea at the Waimea Canyon Park last week.
In the second inning, Kaua‘i worked the bases but Kapa‘a catcher Larae Hoopi‘i came up with big play when she tagged Kaua‘i catcher Carly Matsumoto at the plate, the Raider trying to score on a passed ball. Matsumoto got aboard with an RBI single to score courtesy runner Saryna Garcia, running for pitcher Naja Pungan.
Ta‘ashi Napoleon, starting on the mound for Kapa‘a, also topped the hitting roster, finishing the game with two singles and scoring twice.
Kodi Kimura scored twice and notched a hit and Leeanna Baltazar, coming in for just one at-bat, finished with a score after walking.
Kaua‘i bats, piling up nine hits for 14 runs, were led by Kyana Hirokane who tripled. Waileia Kaneali‘i and Tia Obrero each singled and doubled. Melia Aki made her mark early, slamming a double early in the game. Matsumoto, Kawai Klattenhoff, and Randee Layosa each singled.
With the win in hand, Kaua‘i faces Waimea in a doubleheader, Saturday at the Isenberg Park. First pitch goes off at 10 a.m. followed by the nightcap about 30 minutes following the completion of the first game.
Kapa‘a enjoys a bye until Wednesday, when it will travel to the Waimea Canyon Park in a single game starting at 5:30 p.m.
