LIHU‘E — The Garden Island ‘ohana will bid farewell to government writer and assistant editor Michael Levine on Friday.
Venturing only a hop, skip and an island away, he will be serving as a reporter and host for the new Honolulu-based Web-only start-up company Peer News.
Though he departs with reluctance, Levine said he is excited to be a part of taking journalism “to the next level” in a social media networking platform which will interactively engage readers.
“As excited as I am to get started with this new experiment, I’m very sad to be leaving … we serve a very important purpose here in the community,” he said Wednesday.
One of Levine’s many attributes in the almost two years he was employed at TGI was the manner in which he “quickly integrated into the community,” said TGI Managing Editor Nathan Eagle.
“Among his crowning achievements was his work to provide greater government transparency and hold our elected officials accountable,” he said. “Whoever takes his place here will have big shoes to fill.”
“Mike has been an outstanding reporter and assistant editor for TGI,” said TGI Publisher and Editor Randy Kozerski. “It’s sad to see Mike leave but I’m happy to see him advancing in his career and following his dreams.”
Even though Levine will head to the big city, he said he is “confident the journalists here will continue to do great work, serve the community and get questions answered.”
“We wish him the absolute best and hope to see him in another Lee market in the future,” Kozerski said.
