HANAPEPE — Hanapepe will be blossoming with orchids as the Garden Island Orchid Society hosts its 40th annual Spring Fantasy Orchid Show and sale on Friday and Saturday at the Hanapepe United Church of Christ social hall.
In addition to the orchid exhibits and plant sales, the GIOS will be offering a variety of crafts produced by its members plus baked goods and food.
Admission is free. The exhibit runs from 1 to 7 p.m., Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday.
Coinciding with the orchid show, the Kaua‘i Orchid and Art Festival will be offering workshops for adults and keiki, a juried art competition and Plein Air Painting.
Live music, a craft fair and a children’s art show will be scattered throughout the town.
More than $500 will be offered for first prize in the juried art competition which has an entry deadline of 4 p.m. Monday. Entries must be hand-delivered to the Amy Lauren Gallery located at 4545 Kona Road in Hanapepe and all island artists are invited to participate.
Two- and three-dimensional media, including photography, will be accepted and a separate wet show for Plein Air Painting will be offered Friday and Saturday. Art must be original and independently created by the artist, or a collaboration of artists.
No student work created in a classroom or under an instructor’s direction will be allowed.

Taking the theme of orchids, pastry chef Helen Lacono will be offering a vanilla cuisine workshop, Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. at the Hanapepe Cafe and Bakery.
Vanilla orchid produces the only edible fruit of the orchid family and Lacono will take participants through a two-hour cooking class to learn about vanilla cuisine.
Class size is limited and advance registration can be done by visiting the Hanapepe Web site, or by calling Kimberly Busch-French at 332-5739. Registration deadline is Wednesday.
