KALAHEO — Reymund Mendoza, the power forward for the West Kaua‘i Hornets, finished with a game-high 22 points to lead the Hornets to a 28-27 edge over Papalina-White, Monday night in the county’s 11 and Under boys basketball games.
Keoni Gaorian added five points to Mendoza’s lead in the team described as “new and improved” by Antonio Pope, its coach.
Daniel Fee paced the Papalina-White with 15 points, followed by Kai Lewis finishing with six points and Noah Sasil, the strong guard, adding five points.
Briggs Agu finished with a game-high 19 points, but the Westside effort came up short in the night’s opening game.
Kamea Palama-Alquiza, the low post for Papalina-Blue, finished with nine points and combined with five points from Noah Thompson for a 32-28 edge over the hard-pressing Westside team, which got five points from Joel Soriano in addition to Agu’s 19-point outburst.
The West Kaua‘i Hornets next face the tenacious Lihu‘e team, tonight at 6 p.m., followed by Papalina-Blue going up against Team Central at 7 p.m. at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
