LIHU‘E — The public is invited to attend the First Anniversary Celebration of the Mayor’s Aloha Garden scheduled on Wednesday.
The event will begin at 3 p.m. next to the garden, which is located on the front lawn of the War Memorial Convention Hall.
Hosting the celebration will be members of the Kaua‘i High Key Club, the current stewards of the Mayor’s Aloha Garden, along with Kaua‘i Agricultural Initiative, the group that spearheaded the establishment of the garden. Long-time Kaua‘i entertainer Larry Rivera will provide the music.
“People of all ages have come together and worked on the Aloha Garden, and I am so proud of what they have accomplished,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr. “Over the last year, a wide variety of vegetables have been grown and harvested from this garden, and then delivered to the Kaua‘i Food Bank and The Salvation Army’s Soup Kitchen to support their efforts of feeding our island’s needy residents.”
Barbara Bennett, coordinator of the Kaua‘i Agricultural Initiative, said “It’s been very exciting to be part of this all-volunteer project where so many people have been willing to lend a hand. I hope that the community will join us for this celebration, and maybe they’ll be inspired to start community gardens in their own neighborhoods.”
Among the vegetables that have been grown in the Mayor’s Aloha Garden are the following: beets; cucumbers; curly parsley; green onions; Italian parsley; Manoa lettuce and other varieties of lettuce; peppers; purple basil; spicy basil; string beans; and sweet basil.
Local businesses and organizations who have contributed to the project include: Easter Seals; Gay & Robinson Inc.; Growing Greens Nursery; Kawamura Farms; Kaua‘i Nursery & Landscaping Inc.; Kikiaola Construction Co. Inc; and South Shoreganics.
Siosaia Hakaumotu and Fioni Ulukau installed the irrigation system and built the rock wall around the project.
