WAILUA — Layne Morita, a Kapa‘a boy, is tied for the lead with Andrew Heiser of host Western Kentucky University following two rounds at the 11th Annual Kaua‘i Collegiate Cup, Friday.
Morita, getting the top spot for Chaminade University will be teeing off at 8:06 a.m., along with Scott Samuel of the University of Toronto and Kenny Gregor of the University of Calgary.
Heiser, of the tournament host Hilltoppers, will hit the tee box at 9 a.m. with Inoka Kahawai‘i, leading golfer for Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i and Connor Rumpf, top golfer for the Hawai‘i Pacific University as the Kaua‘i Collegiate Cup wraps up the 54-hole tournament today.
Jordan Oda, another Kaua‘i native, held the sole lead spot following 18 holes of play, the Chaminade University golfer being the only one to shoot under par at a one-under 71 (37-34).
But that changed in the afternoon round when Oda finished in the No. 2 spot for Chaminade after carding an 80 (41-39).
“I spoke with Jordan’s mom and she said he’s never had a 36-hole round before,” said Paul Just, the media coordinator for WKU and the Kaua‘i Collegiate Cup.
Morita finished the first 18 holes with a four-over par 76 (37-39) for the No. 2 spot in the Chaminade team, but rebounded to finish the second round at even par (34-38-72).
Heiser’s round flip-flopped Morita’s, the WKU top golfer ending the first round with an even par (38-34-72) before slipping to a 76 (39-37) in the second round.
Hawai‘i Pacific University, led by Rumpf (78-72-151), holds the team lead following two rounds at 609 (310-299). BYUH, paced by Kahawai‘i (72-78-150), is four strokes back at 613 (302-311), and host WKU is in third at 617 (303-314).
The University of Calgary (324-320-644), the University of Toronto (334-312-646) and Chaminade (332-338-670) round out the team standings.
Following Morita and Heiser, Neil Horsley (75-75-150) of WKU, Kahawai‘i (72-78-150) and Rumpf (78-72-150) are tied for third place, just two strokes off the pace.
Oda, after finishing at the top following the first round, drops to a three-way tie for sixth place with Matt Tweddell (76-75-151) of HPU and Mike Klem (75-76-151).
Kenny Gregor (81-74-155) topped the University of Calgary scoring and Scott Samuel (78-74-152) topped the University of Toronto scoring.
Doug Kleeschulte of host WKU holds the top individualist spot with a 152 (75-77) followed by Andrew Alston (82-77-159) of BYUH. Danny Beatty (83-85-168) of HPU is in third.
The 11th Annual Kaua‘i Collegiate Cup, featuring three Hawai‘i universities, two Canadian universities and host WKU, wraps up today starting at 7:30 a.m.
