LIHU‘E — Winners and their winning posters for the Sight is Beautiful contest were presented during a special assembly Friday at Elsie Wilcox Elementary School.
Students in Kindergarten through grade 5 were eligible to participate in the annual poster contest sponsored by the East Kaua‘i Lions Club, which will be hosting its annual pancake breakfast at 6:30 a.m. Sunday at the Wilcox School cafeteria.
“It was interesting to see the students’ different perspectives on sight,” said Lions Club member Paul Steinfort.
Kirra Carvalho earned the blue ribbon for first place in Division 1 (kindergarten and Grade 1).
Bryce Yoshida won first place, Marissa Layosa second, and Maleia Aguano and Angel Gungab tied for third in Division 2 (grades 1-2).
Jaden Ogata topped Division 3 (grades 2-3), with his entry. Kalen Vidinha finished second. Austin Fernandez and Kaylee Russell finished in a tie for third place.
Jance Medeiros took top honors in Division 4 (grade 5). Ramsses Fulton was not available to show off his poster, but got help from Lion Harvey Kinoshita, the miso soup master chef for Sunday’s breakfast, in showing off the creation.
Sharae Cua was announced as the third-place winner.
“The Sight is Beautiful Poster Contest is always such a fun project,” said JoAnn Steinfort, Sight chair, in the latest issue of the EKLC Lions Bone. “You get to see so many expressions of what children deem important in their young eyes.”
She said following the school-level contest, posters were forwarded to the Zone — that is, island-level judging — which was headed up by Kyungsoo Lee, a Kaua‘i Community College art instructor. Two pieces from Koloa students and two posters from North Shore students were selected to advance to state-level judging.
Proceeds from the annual East Kaua‘i Lions pancake breakfast go to support these types of contests, as well as EKLC’s other community-service projects.
These include the recent used eyeglass collection to help in areas of the world affected by natural disasters; more than 1,500 pairs were collected by Lions Club members during a one-day drive.
The EKLC will be pairing with the Baguio City Host Lions in the Philippines for distribution of the cleaned eyeglasses.
Tickets for the breakfast are available from any of the EKLC Lions or at the door Sunday.
Sam Morningstar is the pancake breakfast chair, with ticket sales being headed up by John Uyeno, Roy Tanaka and Norman Akita.
Members of the Kaua‘i High School Leo Club will be on hand to help the EKLC members to help service diners and help with trash pickup.
Diane Kent is the EKLC president. Paul and JoAnn Steinfort, Roy Nishida, Harvey Kinoshita, John Ochoco and Stephen Fujii were EKLC members who helped with the poster awards.
