The North Shore crowd loves a good party. We checked out Hanalei’s Tahiti Nui last week Saturday and found Matt Bolton, Jeff Caldwell and Rhett Pierce shaking up the historic bar, where a fairly large and mixed crowd danced way past pumpkin time.
Tahiti Nui has been in Hanalei for over five decades. If those walls could talk, they would certainly yield some pretty legendary stories. Many still remember when Aunty Louise was still around, and peacefully greeted every customer.
But the beloved Tahitian also had a strong pulse, and her son Christian Marston still remembers when Aunty Louise told a bunch of barefoot and shirtless hippies to leave the property for not dressing appropriately. Pretty normal stuff, if it wasn’t for the fact that Elizabeth Taylor was among them.
Back in the early 1990s a band called Fantuzzi performed there. A small, happy crowd danced to the band’s Caribbean beat. But that night the star was Cedella Booker, the woman who gave birth to Bob Marley. The graceful lady went up on stage, danced with Fantuzzi, and even performed a couple of songs, all in that tiny space, at arm’s reach. It was the next best thing to seeing Bob Marley himself.
Bolton, Caldwell and Rhett might not be quite famous as Booker, Taylor or Marley, but they do know how to animate a crowd with their unreal musical talent. For more information on the trio’s schedule call the Tahiti Nui at 826-6277.
