NAMPA, Idaho – The University of Hawai‘i women’s track and field team is in second place after the first day of the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, Thursday at Idaho Center and Jackson Track, according to a release from the UH athletic department.
The Rainbow Wahine scored seven team points in the pentathlon with Samantha Balentine and Natalija Waldhuber each placing in the top eight. Balentine finished with fourth after completing the five disciplines with 3,468 points, while Waldhuber was seventh with 3,248 points.
Balentine won the pentathlon’s high jump competition after clearing 5-7.25 (1.71m).
Also among the 19 pentathlon competitors for the Rainbow Wahine were freshman Cecelia Durocher (2,847 pts., 13th) and freshman Sarah Rutsch (2,727 pts., 16th).
Idaho leads the team standings with 22 points with gold, silver, and fifth-place finishes in the pentathlon. Ulrike Hartz took top honors with 3,784 points, followed by teammate Lindsay Goodman with 3,545 points.
The WAC Championships continue today, the first full day of competition.
Softball squad shut down
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. — The University of Hawai‘i softball team (8-4) dropped the opening game of the 2010 Cathedral City Classic to Oklahoma State, 4-0, states a UH press release.
Hawai‘i pitcher Kaia Parnaby suffered her first loss of the season, despite a 10-strikeout performance today at the Big League Dreams Sports Park’s Fenway field in Cathedral City, Calif.
Oklahoma State pitcher, Anna Whiddon (4-2), stymied the UH offense, firing a one-hit shutout. She had three walks and six strike outs in the complete game effort.
Men’s hoops falls further
LIHU‘E — The University of Hawai‘i men’s basketball team dropped a 61-50 final to the tough Utah State Aggies (23-6, 12-2 in WAC), Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Warriors (9-18, 2-11) dropped their ninth straight game and play their final home game of the season at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow night against Nevada.
UH got off to a rough start offensively, shooting 7 of 25 (28 percent) in the first half and trailing 25-17 at intermission.
Hiram Thompson led the Warriors with 13 points, followed by Brandon Adams and Adhar Mayen with 12 points apiece.
Roderick Flemings had 11 points and four rebounds.
Baseball notches W
over No. 25 Ducks
HONOLULU – The University of Hawai‘i Rainbow baseball team (2-3) defeated the No. 25 Oregon Ducks (3-2) 4-3 in front of a crowd of 2,223 at Les Murakami Stadium, Thursday. Nate Klein (1-0) got the win, allowing three runs in 6.0 innings pitched. Tyler Anderson (1-1) took the loss for the Ducks while Lenny Linsky picked up his first save of the season.
Jeffrey Van Doornum led the way for the ’Bows, going 2-for-3 with a home run and a double.
