Sophie Britzmann, 14, was a perfect 4-for-4 and earned three new State Qualifying times at the Swim Kaua‘i Aquatics meet, Sunday at the YMCA pool in Puhi.
“Sophie had the kind of day athletes dream of,” said Stacey Machorek of SKA. “She started the meet with a 20-second drop in the 200-yard Backstroke, ending with an AA time of 2:36.58. Then, the State Qualifying times started rolling in.”
Britzmann picked up a 1:00.50 swim in the 100-yard Freestyle, improving on her previous swim by .64 seconds. That was followed by a 27.57 swim in the 50-yard Freestyle. Her final State Qualifying time stopped the clocks at 5:13.60 in the 400-yard Individual Medley, shaving 7.10 seconds from her seeded time.
“Sophie had a phenomenal day,” said Billy Brown, head coach of SKA. “All of the training and focus really paid off her her today.
Jazmyn Ibaan Carvalho, 12, also posted a perfect meet, earning State Qualifying times in some of her swims.
Carvalho pocketed a State time in the 50-yard Freestyle on a 28.67 swim and posted a new AA time standard in the 100-yard Freestyle by slicing 2.06 seconds off her seeded time.
The boys were not to be outdone as Quinn Hannah White, 13, clinched two new AA times, one coming in the 100-yard Freestyle (1:02.94) and the other in the 50-yard Freestyle (29.52) en route to a perfect meet.
Pualei Pratt and Zachary Safford, both 10, posted excellent Sunday performances with 4-for-4 swims.
Shannon Smith, 9, experienced his first swim meet amidst cheering of his family and ended by posting a B standard on his 44.24 swim in the 50-yard Freestyle. Smith also swam the 50-yard Backstroke, the 50-yard Breaststroke and the 100-yard Freestyle.
“This was a great meet,” Brown said. “Our training is really coming along and the kids are seeing the results.
The Sunday meet climaxed a busy SKA weekend where swimmers earned top honors in their respective age groups.
Matthew Vickers topped the Boys 8 and Under, Dutch Fairbanks headed the Boys 9-10, Kate Machorek was tops in the Girls 11-12, Bryson Baligad headed the Boys 11-12, Tyler Keith topped the Boys 13-14 and Anya Littlefield, coming off a strong showing at the HHSAA state championships on the Big Island, topped the Girls 15-16 group.
