NIUMALU — A backyard fire in Niumalu Valley got out of control Wednesday afternoon and burned two old collapsed wooden sheds, a county press release states.
The sheds were located about 25 feet away from the fire and were approximately 300 square feet and 150 square feet, respectively.
No one was injured in the fire.
Engine 3, Rescue 3, Engine 5 and Truck 5 responded to the 12:09 p.m. alarm. The fire was deemed under control and fully extinguished within minutes of their arrival, the release states.
Fire officials are asking the public to please exercise caution when burning leaves, grass and wood in their backyards, and to notify Police Dispatch and the nearest county fire station prior to lighting a backyard fire, the release states.
Other recommendations regarding open burning are as follows:
— Fires should be completed during daylight hours, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and only when wind conditions are favorable and less than 10 mph.
— The amount to be burned should be not more than 25 pounds per day per household.
— The burning location should be not less than 50 feet away from any structure or brush-covered area.
— Fires should be constantly tended to by a competent adult until such fires are fully extinguished.
— A garden hose connected to a water supply or other fire extinguishing equipment should be available for immediate use.
— If the smoke or odor from the fire impacts neighbors negatively, the fire should be extinguished immediately.
