LIHU‘E — There were no injuries but “significant damage” to a vehicle of The Kaua‘i Bus when it was involved in an accident Monday morning at a Kuhio Highway entrance to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, said Mary Daubert, county spokesperson.
She said the northbound county bus was making a right-hand turn off the highway toward the bus stop at the main hospital entrance around 11:38 a.m. when a maroon GMC pickup “sideswiped” The Kaua‘i Bus on the right side of the bus.
There was significant damage to bus and truck, but neither was disabled.
There were three passengers on the bus at the time of the incident, said Lt. Sherwin Kaleo Perez, Kaua‘i Police Department Patrol Services Bureau Lihu‘e district commander.
Police were “unable to confirm at this time if the bus driver did have his right turn signal on,” said Perez.
The event was classified as major accident in the KPD incident daily bulletin due to the amount of damage done to the involved vehicles.
Responding to a question about whether or not The Kaua‘i Bus drivers (in the county Transportation Agency) have mandatory post-accident drug testing, Daubert said Federal Transit Administration guidelines call for mandatory drug testing only if there is a fatality, transport for an injury, or if either vehicle is towed from the scene.
None of those elements was present, so no drug test was performed.
