LIHU‘E – Two Kaua‘i men died in a head-on collision Friday on Kaumuali‘i Highway near the Pune‘e Road intersection in ‘Oma‘o, said a county spokesperson.
They had not been identified as of 2:30 p.m. today, and they are the fourth and fifth people to die on Kaua‘i roads this year.
Just 50 days into the new year, five have died, and if that pace kept up the island would end up with 37 traffic deaths by year’s end.
That would be more than the previous three years combined (28), according to KPD records. The highest annual total in the last five years is 14, recorded in 2006, KPD records show.
The highway was closed from 10:30 a.m. until shortly after 1 p.m., with all traffic in both directions diverted through Koloa while the Kaua‘i Police Department investigation continued.
