The Kapa‘a Lady Warriors knocked off No. 3 seed and undefeated Sacred Hearts in the quarterfinals of the Hawaiian Airlines HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships by a 64-49 final score, Wednesday night on O‘ahu.
Ash-lyn Lee was 7 of 11 from the floor on her way to a game-high 16 points. She also grabbed six rebounds and had five steals.
Mahea Hanie-Grace had 10 points and five assists, while Tori Tuttle had six points, 11 rebounds and three blocks.
Kapa‘a (10-1) now is into the final four and will take on No. 2 seed Kaimuki (14-1) at 7 p.m. tonight at Farrington High School.
The Lady Warriors’ defense stymied their opponent and forced Sacred Hearts into shooting just 31 percent (19 of 62) for the game.
Kapa‘a dominated the inside, coming away with a 34-8 edge in points in the paint.
It got off to a good start and led 16-11 after the first quarter, then maintained the five-point margin with a 30-25 halftime edge.
It inched out to an eight-point lead after three and put the game away with a 17-10 final quarter.
Kapa‘a shot exceptionally well from the field, ending the night with a 47 percent rate (24 of 51).
Layna Christian and Jessilyn Aki each had nine points, Kira Nakamura had seven and Ala McCabe had four.
Lahela Creamer and Shalyn Tupou chipped in two and one points, respectively.
In other Div. II action, No. 2 seed Kaimuki had an easy time with Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy, coasting to a 56-28 win and outscoring HPA 30-4 in the paint.
Alison Pologa led Kaimuki with 19 points.
Top-seeded Molokai (11-0) dismissed Kaiser (7-9) by a 67-56 final, while No. 4 Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i (10-5) topped Kahuku (13-4), 67-48.
Those two teams will face off in the other Div. II semifinal, also at 7 p.m. tonight at Kalani High School.
In the consolation bracket, University High (11-9) knocked off Seabury Hall (7-5) by a 48-35 score. Quynne Eharis scored 23 points in the win after scoring 33 in Tuesday’s loss to Kapa‘a.
Word of Life (12-5) came away with a 50-48 win over Hawai‘i Baptist Academy (10-7).
