Kapa‘a took its first successful step battling the state’s best teams as it notched a narrow 56-55 win over University in the first round of the Hawaiian Airlines HHSAA Div. II Girls Basketball State Championships on O‘ahu.
Guard Jessilyn Aki led Kapa‘a with 18 points, followed by Ash-lyn Lee and Mahea Hanie-Grace with 10 points apiece.
Ala McCabe scored eight, Kira Nakamura had seven and Layna Christian and Tori Tuttle chipped in two and one points, respectively.
Hanie-Grace and Aki each nailed two 3-pointers and Nakamura added a triple of her own.
University’s offense went through Quynne Eharis and she responded by putting her team on her back and piling up 33 points.
Kapa‘a (9-1) survived a second-half comeback attempt after holding a nine-point halftime lead at 29-20.
University (10-9) rebounded with a 16-9 advantage in the third quarter to get itself right back in the game and Kapa‘a escaped out of the Farrington High School Gym with the slimmest of victories.
The Lady Warriors now head into the quarterfinals and will take on No. 3-seeded Sacred Hearts at 7 p.m. tonight at Farrington.
Sacred Hearts is unbeaten this season after coming out of the the Interscholastic League of Honolulu a perfect 15-0.
In other Div. II action, Kaiser (7-8) took down Hawai‘i Baptist (10-6) by a 54-38 score.
Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy (6-5) used a 13-0 first quarter to knock off Seabury Hall (7-4) by a 55-44 final score.
Kahuku (13-3) ran all over Word of Life (11-5), 68-34.
Top-seeded Molokai will take on Kaiser at 5 p.m. today in the quarters. No. 2 Kaimuki will face Hawai‘i Prep at 5 p.m. and No. 4 Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i will face Kahuku at 7 p.m.
