LIHU‘E — A dead body was retrieved Sunday afternoon from Kalalau Valley, according to Inter-Island Helicopters owner Ken D’Attilio and county spokesperson Mary Daubert.
A helicopter tour company contacted Police Dispatch at around 2:30 p.m. and reported SOS written on Kalalau Beach, Daubert said.
Air-1 flew in to Kalalau Valley and learned that there was a dead body in the valley. Air-1 then picked up rescue crew members Albert Kaui, Alan Lizama and Frank Subee from Princeville Airport and dropped them off at a landing pad in Kalalau, D’Attilio said.
The rescue specialists spoke to people in the area and were led to the location where the body was found, roughly a 15-minute hike away, according to D’Attilio and Daubert.
They retrieved the body, loaded it onto a Stokes litter and hiked back to the landing pad.
The rescue specialists were picked up by Air-1 and brought to Princeville Airport. The remains were then turned over to the Kaua‘i Police Department at 6 p.m., Daubert said.
D’Attilio said the dead body was that of a man in his late 50s. He said the person who discovered him had hiked in to look for the man because he was overdue, but found him dead in his sleeping bag.
Daubert said the identity of the body is unknown.
