LIHU‘E — The Kapa‘a Warriors, which obtained the No. 2 seed in the JN Automotive/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championship tournament, advanced to the semifinals with a 2-0 victory over Makua Lani, Thursday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on O‘ahu.
LIHU‘E — The Kapa‘a Warriors, which obtained the No. 2 seed in the JN Automotive/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championship tournament, advanced to the semifinals with a 2-0 victory over Makua Lani, Thursday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex on O‘ahu.
Kapa‘a (9-3-1) took the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation championship by holding off the Waimea Menehune in the season’s final match and now sits two wins away from a Hawai‘i Div. II state title.
The Warriors and the Makua Lani Lions (7-5-4) played a defensive struggle for much of the match and were scorless at halftime.
The second half would prove more successful for Kapa‘a as Kaisen Carrillo scored the first goal of the match in the 59th minute, which would prove to be the game-winner.
Brycen Phillips added the finishing touch with a score in the 80th minute, icing the victory.
Kapa‘a advances to face the Honoka‘a Dragons (11-2-3) in the semis, after their 3-0 victory over the McKinley Tigers (8-4-1).
Honoka‘a took control of its match early, capitalizing on a McKinley own goal by following it up with two goals from Sage Johnson in the 12th and 23rd minutes.
The top-seeded Mid-Pacific Owls (10-2-1) advanced with a 2-0 win over the Christian Liberty Canefire (10-3-3). They will now take on the Seabury Hall Spartans (7-0-6), which needed overtime to come away with a 1-0 win over the No. 4-seeded Kailua Surfriders (9-4-0).
The two semifinal matchups will be played simultaneously this afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Waipio Complex.
The Div. I and II championship matches will be shown live tomorrow on OC16. The Div. II final will be up first at 5 p.m., followed by Div. I at 7 p.m.
