The Kaua‘i High School girls paddling team finished fourth at the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state championship paddling regatta, Friday at Keehi Lagoon on O‘ahu.
The Red Raider wahine, anchored by steersperson Carly Matsumoto, ended the finals on a 4:22.88 paddle, almost seven seconds behind Pac-Five’s team that topped the division on a 4:15.54 run.
That championship run was almost five seconds better than its preliminary heat performance, where Pac-Five stopped the clocks at 4:19.8 on a first finish in the first heat.
Sercond place in the girls division went to KSB-O‘ahu (4:20.50), followed by Baldwin (4:21.37) of Maui.
The Kaua‘i girls’ fourth-place finish was almost two seconds better than the Punahou team’s run of 4:24.36.
The Kapa‘a boys paddling team, taking the KIF title by a point over Kaua‘i on the final regatta of the season, finished third in the semifinal heats on a 3:48.95, just .32 seconds behind the Waialua team (3:48.63). Earlier, the Warrior men finished third in the second heat of the preliminaries on a 3:44.80 run to advance to the semifinals.
Kamehameha Schools B-O‘ahu’s team topped the boys division on a 3:39.69 run over Mid-Pacific Institute (3:42.39) and Seabury (3:44.48).
Kapa‘a’s Mixed team, strong throughout the KIF season, finished fifth in the second heat of the division on a 4:00.22 paddle to advance to the semis where the team improved to fourth on a 4:09.69 run.
Kalaheo High School topped the Mixed division, finishing the finals on a 3:47.31 paddle followed by Kamehameha Schools-Oahu (3:48.96), Nanakuli (3:52.60) and Punahou (3:53.50).
