LIHU‘E — The first of two matches against rival UCLA did not go in the Warriors’ favor Thursday night, as the men’s volleyball team dropped a 30-27, 25-30, 26-30, 25-30 defeat to the Bruins at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The No. 6 ranked UH squad had a four-match win streak heading into the evening’s contest against their fellow Mountain Pacific Sports Federation competitors, but could not come away with the win.
Jonas Umlauft had a team-high 16 kills for UH, followed by Steven Hunt’s 15.
Joshua Walker added eight, while Matt Rawson and Brennon Dyer each had seven. Rawson also added five blocks.
Setter Nejc Zemljak had 46 of the team’s 52 assists in the match, while Ric Cervantes led the way with 16 digs.
The Bruins got a huge match from Garrett Muagututia, who tallied 21 kills, eight digs and four blocks in the match.
Jack Polales had nine blocks and 10 digs.
The Warriors (6-3, 4-2 MPSF) swept a two-match series with defending national champion UC Irvine last week at home and moved up three spots to a tie for sixth in the national poll.
The Bruins have won six of the last seven in the series that dates back to 1981. Last season, UCLA swept both matches at Pauley Pavilion, including a five-setter on the first night that went 15-13 in the fifth.
Tonight will be the second match against No. 4 UCLA, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
