The local boys showed at the Kaua‘i Knockout Championship how it’s done. The audience at the sold-out event, held last weekend at the War Memorial Convention Hall, saw a total domination by Kaua‘i fighters, who won almost all of their matches.
We were there to check out the Mixed Martial Arts competition, and saw a nearly flawless organized event. Two massive screens were placed on both sides of the stage, and another one by the beer garden.
Brad “Kipi” Akana and Jonathan Rivera take a lot of credit for putting the amateur event together.
The night offered Kickboxing, No Gi Jiu-Jitsu, Pankration and MMA matchups. Remarkably, there was no prize money involved for the fighters, who gave a lot of heart in the cage.
All fighters, winners or losers, showed an impressive display of skill, strength and sportsmanship.
