LIHU‘E — The state Department of Land and Natural Resources will close the ‘Opaeka‘a Falls lookout and parking area on Monday and Tuesday for public safety while the parking area is resurfaced and striped, a news release states.
Appropriate signage and protective barriers will be utilized. Project contractor is Ka‘iwa Construction, Inc and the contract cost is $311,504. Funding was provided by the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority. Completion is expected in early 2010.
“We thank park visitors for their cooperation as work progresses,” said DLNR Chair Laura Thielen. “This project completes the full scope of improvements we planned for this lookout.”
In 2007, a new comfort station and sewer system were constructed. In July 2009 construction began on walkway, guardrail replacement, a new viewing platform and parking area improvements that will comply with accessibility requirements.
‘Opaeka‘a Falls Lookout is located in Wailua, 2.5 miles south of Kapa‘a, and 1.5 miles west from Kuhio Highway along Kuamo‘o Road (Hwy. 580).
