Charles Sumera
Charles Herman Sumera of Lihu‘e died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Jan. 22, 2010, at age 46. Born in Honolulu on May 23, 1963, he worked with the State Housing Authority as a groundskeeper.
He is survived by his parents, Herman and Guillerma “Irma” Sumera; brother, Andrew (Jessica Choy) Sumera; sister, Susan (Brian) Caseria, all of Hilo; nieces, Kamalei Caseria of O‘ahu and Brooke Caseria of Hilo; nephew Ranson Yoneda of Hilo; numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 28, at King’s Cathedral and Chapel in ‘Ele‘ele Shopping Center (next to Ace Hardware Store) with visitation at 9:30 a.m. and services at 11 a.m.
A memorial service will also be held on the Big Island.
Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home assisted the Sumera family with arrangements.
Conrado Francisco
Conrado Mercado Francisco of Kaumakani died Jan. 22, 2010, at his residence at age 87. Born Feb. 25, 1922, in Laoag, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he was a retired mechanic with Olokele Sugar Company.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Benito and Severina Francisco; and siblings, Maria Alquiza, Marcelino Francisco, Anacleta Tagatac, Dolores Seguritan, Caridad Eichelberger and Milesia Francisco Quintana.
He is survived by his wife, Sumile Goto Francisco; sons, Millard Taylor Jr. of Covina, Calif., Steven Taylor of Mililani, Hawai‘i, and Dennis Francisco of Alaska; daughters, Patricia Cabinte of Waipahu, Hawai‘i, Stephanie F. Verduga of Covina, Calif., and Caroline Nakamura of Waipahu, Hawai‘i; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Juan Francisco of Hanapepe; sister, Olivia Gubaton of Kaumakani; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. and service will be from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 30, at Garden Island Mortuary chapel.
Casual attire is suggested. Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary.
Joan Campbell
Joan W. Campbell of Lihu‘e died Jan. 19, 2010, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at age 78. She was born April 9, 1931, in Coldwater, Mich.
She is survived by her husband, Harold Campbell of Lihu‘e; son, Steven M. (Sharly) Ward; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be held at a later date.
Shannon Abreu
Shannon Patrick Abreu of Kapa‘a died Jan. 18, 2010, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at age 48. He was born Jan. 19, 1961, on Kaua‘i.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Emalia Abreu.
He is survived by his father, Fibrium Abreu; two sisters, Soncy (Nelson) Tamashiro and Melissa Abreu; and numerous nieces.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30, at Hanapep Salvation Army Church with visitation at 10 a.m. and service at 11 a.m.
Lillian Galas
Lillian Yuriko Galas of Koloa died Jan. 15, 2010, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at age 95. Born July 12, 1914, on O‘ahu, she was a retired sales clerk for Kress Store.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leocadio Galas, and her granddaughter, Cyndi Asai.
She is survived by her son, Leonard “Bumpy” Galas of Koloa; three daughters, Vivian (Eugene) Rinehart of California, Katy (Albert) Asai of Kapa‘a, and Carol (Tom) Rose of California; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services were held Monday, Jan. 25, at St. Raphael’s Church in Koloa.
Vicente Cubangbang
Vicente Afaga Cubangbang of Lihu‘e died Jan. 10, 2010, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital at age 89. Born Dec. 7, 1920, in Cabaruan Bacarra Ilocos Norte, Philippines, he retired as a groundskeeper for Coco Palms and also worked for Tomato Farms in Hilo.
He is survived by his wife, Enriqueta Acob Cubangbang; 11 children, Martina Cubangbang, Josefina (Bert) Ventura, Lucrecia (Reynoldo) Aurelio, Leo (Jesusa) Cubangbang, Ross (Jocelyn) Cubangbang, Carlos (Helen) Cubangbang, Felino (Dominga) Cubangbang, Evaristo (Eilza) Cubangbang, Silverio (Eleanor) Cubangbang, Corazon (Angel) Cruz and Greg (Jane) Cubangbang; four sisters, Victoria Cubangbang Budua, Felicidad Cubangbang Acob, Remedios Cubangbang Acob, Evarista Cubangbang Afaga; two brothers, Simplicio and Andres Cubangbang; 23 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, Jan. 29, at Borthwick Mortuary chapel in Koloa from 6 to 9 p.m., and again on Saturday, Jan. 30, at Immaculate Conception Church from 8 to 9:45 a.m. where Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Kalapaki Bay Memorial Park Cemetery.
