HANAPEPE — Isaac Fierro netted two goals to lead the Waimea JV boys, currently in the lead of the JV standings, to a 4-1 win over Kaua‘i in the nightcap, Thursday at Hanapepe Stadium.
Kaua‘i’s Kyren Ishikawa had two assists and a goal to lead the JV Red Raiders girls to a 2-1 edge over Waimea.
In addition to Fierro’s goals, which came in the 33rd and 39th minutes, Teofilo Baloaloa netted a goal in the 37th minute and Kaleo Hauata scored in the 42nd minute for the 4-0 lead before Kaua‘i answered in the 59th minute on a goal from Blaise Ferguson.
The girls win keeps control of the JV girls soccer in the Kaua‘i camp after the team’s final season game.
Waimea took control of most of the first half and Ku‘ulei Breen netted a goal in the 14th minute for the 1-0 halftime lead after most of the game was played on the Kaua‘i side of the field, the JV Raiders’ goalkeeper Jennifer Grady getting bounced across the goalmouth on saves.
The second half started almost as the first half ended, but with the wind at their back, the Red Raiders mounted their offensive, Ishikawa beating out Menehune defender Kaybla Cachero-Ramos up the wing and taking a shot.
The shot dribbled past Waimea goalkeeper Sondra Jacinto, but Daeja Cummings was waiting on the other side of the goalmouth for the follow through, Ishikawa credited for an assist on the score that knotted the game 1-1 at the 50th minute.
Waimea adjusted its defense and pulled Hallie Cristobal from the forward ranks to defense where she joined Mahea Hurd and Jacinto in stopping the Raider forays into the box.
On a breakaway play up the middle, Ishikawa beat out Hurd, a rare event for the fast Menehune defender, and fired up the middle.
The ball dribbled, its journey lacking the oomph to cross the plane. Jacinto went down on the save and Ishikawa, following up on the shot, used her whole body to score, following the ball over Jacinto and into the net.
Her score broke the 1-1 deadlock with about a minute remaining in the match.
“Pound for pound, I think Kyren has more determination than a lot of other players,” said Kevin Devitt, coach for the Kaua‘i JV girls team. “The girls were a little slow getting out, but once they started rolling, they were okay.”
Waimea next travels to the New Kapa‘a Town Park stadium, Saturday for the final Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation soccer game of the season. JV games start at 10 a.m.
