HANAPEPE — Hallie Cristobal smacked a goal at the 18-minute mark and Waimea held on to win the JV girls soccer match, 1-0, Thursday at Hanapepe Stadium.
Although Kapa‘a demonstrated strong ball control, the Waimea defense rose to the occasion, keeping the Warriors outside during both halves.
Both coaches, J.J. Simbre of Waimea and Gwen Tamura of Kapa‘a, capitalized on the game to rotate their players through different positions in an effort at trying to strengthen their play.
Mia Cabulisan, normally the strong defender for Kapa‘a, got an opportunity to wrangle against the Waimea defense as forward during the second half.
However, after the strong transition play of Cristobal moved the ball to strong forwards Jayme Knapp, Cabulisan was moved back to stopper.
Taylor Ochoa also played both ends of the field, but could not get past the Menehune defense anchored by Amber Fujimoto, Mahea Hurd and Ember Teter, whose heads-up play saved a goal after goalkeeper Sandra Jacinto went down on a save, the ball still dangerously close to the goalmouth.
With Kapa‘a’s Tori Pezario closing fast, Teter boomed the ball out of danger to preserve the edge.
Complete scoring for the boys’ game was not available at press time. However, Waimea held a 1-0 lead in the first half, according to spectators who left the game to visit the county’s 13 and Under league in Kalaheo.
The Kapa‘a JV squad next travel to Vidinha Stadium, Saturday where they square off against Kaua‘i with the girls kicking off at 10 a.m. and the boys startin at 11:45 a.m. Waimea next plays Kaua‘i at Hanapepe Stadium starting at 4:30 p.m. next Thursday.
