The Baseball Factory and Under Armour Baseball tryouts will take place Jan. 23 at Vidinha Stadium starting at 1 p.m. said Kirk Correa, a community baseball coach and parent of Dallas Correa, one of the tryout participants.
Earlier, there was concern due to the lack of registrants for the program which showcases student athletes’ abilities and skills in baseball.
Correa said the program needed at least 20 participants and at the time of the notice, only six had registered, jeopardizing the tryouts.
“This is a good opportunity for Kaua‘i’s baseball players to have the same opportunity as O‘ahu players without having the expense of traveling to O‘ahu,” Correa said.
Dallas, who will be taking part at the Vidinha Stadium tryouts, said he experienced last year’s program after learning about it from his teammates and coaches while attending school on O‘ahu.
After participating in the day-long event, Correa was selected to play on the Pro-Select team and traveled to Omaha, Neb., where in addition to playing against some of the top players in the nation, he was also able to attend two College World Series Games.
Kirk said that’s when he became familiar with the program and after learning the coaches would be in Hawai‘i, approached them about hosting a tryout on Kaua‘i so some of Kaua‘i’s baseball players can take advantage of the program.
With the assurance the tryout will take place, Kirk said the event officials have extended the deadline for more interested players to register. The deadline has been extended until Jan. 22 and interested players and parents can register online by visiting www.baseballfactory.com.
Once there, select “Jan 23, Kauai” which will direct players to the “Vidinha Stadium” link to register.
The tryouts are open to players between 13-18 years old and cost is $99 for one position, or $129 for a second position.
A professional-grade video option is also available.
A tentative list of players signed up for the tryout include Bronson and Bryan Aiwohi, Kellen Aquino, Dalton Brun, Robert Campos, Dallas Correa, Kahai Hosaka, Brehdan Kamibayashi, Kendall Kaohi, Jensen Koga, Rashaan Kuhaulua, Kaimana Perreira-Alquiza, Collin Pungan, Micah Rita, Mikeo Rita, Mikey Rita, Shea Shimabukuro, Chyson Soares, Taran Tani and Justin Wisneski.
