LIHU‘E — A Lihu‘e woman suffered burns to her face and shoulders early Wednesday morning while helping her mother out of their burning home.
All of the occupants of the Pua Nani Street house were transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, treated for smoke inhalation and released, except for the woman, a county news release states. She was transported to Straub Clinic & Hospital for further treatment.
The fire was reported by a neighbor at around 3:02 a.m.
Twelve fire fighters arrived at the scene at around 3:10 a.m. The fire was deemed under control at around 3:30 a.m. and fully extinguished at 4:30 a.m., the release says.
Fire officials estimate damages to the 1,800 square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bath home and its contents to be $450,000, including two vehicles in the enclosed garage.
No damage was reported at the three neighboring homes, each located approximately 40 feet away from the burning home. Some of the palms bordering one of the neighbor’s homes were blackened by the blaze and a trash can outside had melted.
Red Cross volunteers went to the scene to ensure the immediate emergency needs of anyone affected — such as shelter, food and clothing — were met. Caseworkers will continue to follow up with the family to ensure their immediate needs are met, and to provide referrals to assist with their disaster recovery, according to an e-mail from Cindy Tanaka, ARC Hawai‘i Chapter chief of staff.
