Wednesday is the deadline for interested baseball players to register for the Baseball Factory Under Armour tryouts, said Kirk Correa, whose son Dallas worked through the program last year.
Tryouts are scheduled for Vidinha Stadium, Jan. 23 starting from 1 p.m. due to SAT testing in the morning.
“I just got off the phone with the coaches and they said only six players have enrolled so far,” Correa said in an e-mail. “They need at least 20 players by Wednesday or they will have to cancel.”
Correa said his son Dallas attended the tryouts on O‘ahu last year and was selected to play on the pro-select team, traveling to Omaha, Neb. where they played against some of the top players in the country.
“They also attended two college world series games which was quite an experience,” Correa said. “The coaches will be in Hawai‘i so I asked them if they could come to Kaua‘i and showcase our Kaua‘i kids. This would save families the expense of travel, accomodations and transportation if they had to travel to O‘ahu.”
Kirk said as a parent and coach, the tryouts are a great opportunity and the young men of Kaua‘i can get some exposure.
“This is a really good way for players to get exposure so they can have the opportunity to play for colleges and beyond,” said Dallas, who learned of the tryouts through his O‘ahu coaches and classmates. “I’ll be there on the 23rd to see if I can get selected to play, again.”
Players between the ages of 13 through 18 are eligible and registration can be done online at www.baseballfactory.com.
Once there, select “Jan. 23, Kauai” which will lead to another link. There, select “Vidinha Stadium” and follow the link to register.
Registration fee is $99 for one position, or $129 for a second position. Video of two positions is available for $595.
“Dallas did this last year, and the video was really good,” Kirk said. “They filmed him hitting, catching and fielding and put the video on their Web site where he could send it to different colleges to view.”
Dallas said during the tryouts, there are scouts who evaluate what is happening and once done, the participant receives a written evaluation. This can also be sent to colleges as a reference.
Coaches will also be available to talk to parents about baseball and academics and explain what colleges look for in student athletes.
“We really want our Kaua‘i players to have this opportunity at home,” Dallas said. “It’s a really good way to see what is out there in college baseball and beyond.”
