LIHU‘E — The University of Hawai‘i men’s volleyball squad won a 3-0 match over the Ohio State Buckeyes, Thursday night in its 2010 season opener.
The match, the second of a doubleheader as the Stan Sheriff Center hosts the 16th Outrigger Hotels Invitational, saw the Warriors come away with a 30-20, 30-20, 30-26 victory.
Hawai‘i’s Joshua Walker led all players with 17 kills. Jonas Umlauft had 14 for the Warriors, who outkilled the Buckeyes by a 50-40 tally for the match.
Setter Nejc Zemljak had 44 of the Warriors’ 49 assists.
Shawn Sangrey led Ohio State with 11 kills.
The Warriors played a stellar defensive match, coming up with 36 digs.
In the first match of the night, USC notched a straigh-set win over Penn State.
USC, a 30-28, 30-24, 30-24 winner, will again play in the first match of today’s schedule. It will tip against Ohio State at 4 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
UH will then get back on the court to face Penn State at 7 p.m.
The two Big Ten schools will clash in Saturday’s opening contest at 4 p.m.
The Warriors will close the festivities with a 7 p.m. matchup with USC.
These same four teams participated in this event to kick off last season. Penn State was victorious at that round-robin tournament, finishing the week with a 3-0 record.
USC came second at 2-1, followed by UH (1-2) and Ohio State (0-3).
