KAPA‘A — Four invitational records fell and five consideration spots were pocketed by swimmers at the first Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation qualifying swim meet, Saturday at the Kapa‘a pool.
When the water settled, the Kaua‘i High School girls, led by three records broken by senior Keisha Anaya, topped the points listing at 102 points followed by Kapa‘a (92 points) and Island School (17 points).
The Kapa‘a High School boys, paced by the first finish consideration swim by Kanoa Nartatez in the Boys 50 Yard Freestyle event, edged out Kaua‘i High School by 5 points. Kapa‘a tallied 75 points followed by Kaua‘i (70 points), Waimea High School (36 points) and Island School (6 points).
Of the invitational records broken, all were in girls events with three being relays and one being an individual event where Anaya set a new standard in the Girls 100 Yard Backstroke with a 1:07.84 swim, securing a consideration spot (1:08.39) en route to breaking a record set Feb. 14, 2004 by Waimea swimmer Katelyn Umetsu at 1:10.35.
Anaya was also on two of the three record-setting relay teams, the first being the Girls 200 Yard Medley Relay where she was joined by Sophie Britzman, Tori Kobayashi and Christina Albano who stopped the clock at 2:06.82 to earn a consideration (2:10.49) en route to breaking the record of 2:10.47 set Feb. 14, 2004 by the Waimea team of K. Umetsu, L. Alquiza, T. Tumbaga and J. Cassmas.
Anaya was joined by Kobayashi, Kaitlyn Santos, and Britzman in the Girls 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team which stopped the clock at 4:10.20, earning another consideration spot (4:16.99) while bettering the record set by the Kapa‘a team of H. Skyes, L. Nakazawa, M. BenDor, and M. Grooms at 4:22.84 set on Feb. 14, 2004.
But Anaya was not done as she was on a record-setting pace in the Girls 200 Yard Individual Medley event when her team-mate took ill in the lane next to her.
That stopped the Kaua‘i senior almost dead in her tracks, and when the swimming resumed, Anaya stopped the clock at 2:35.92, good enough for a first finish in the event, but falling three seconds shy of the record set by Umetsu (2:32.89) on Jan. 19. 2002.
Competition in that event was tight, most notably in the second heat when Kapa‘a’s Kaitlyn Jarry, top seeded in the heat, and Megan Chock of Island School waged a head-to-head campaign through the first three phases of the event before Jarry pulled out on the final 25 yards of the breaststroke and capped the win in the freestyle.
Jarry stopped the clock at 2:42.57, just about three seconds ahead of Chock (2:45.81).
Kaua‘i High School girls took one more record when the team of Santos, Melisa Peck, Nani Reguendorf and Albano stopped the clock at 1:54.25 in the Girls 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, falling just short of a consideration spot (1:54.09), but breaking a record set by the Kapa‘a team of Nakazawa, BenDor, T. McClintoc, and Skyes of 1:54.90 set on Feb. 14, 2004.
Emma Rausch, a sophomore at Kapa‘a High School, secured a consideration spot in the Girls 100 Yard Freestyle event on a first finish of 58.91, bettering the consideration standard of 59.06.
KIF swimming moves to the Kaua‘i High School pool this Saturday starting at 10 a.m., the second meet where Kaua‘i swimmers can qualify for state berths.
