Editor’s note: From now through Dec. 24, The Garden Island will share stories of families who could use a little holiday cheer along with an appeal for monetary donations of any size. Funds raised will be distributed to needy families by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to help make these simple wishes come true. Because of logistical limitations, only monetary donations can be accepted.
A bike for Sierra
Anastasia is a 26-year-old single mother to Sierra who is 7 years old. The family had been homeless but now have temporary housing. Although Anastasia has been through a bumpy road in her life she is still moving forward with her education and also working to provide a safe and stable environment for her and her daughter. Sierra would like a bicycle and a helmet so that she can ride around the neighborhood with her friends. (G7)
DVD player for Joshua
Joshua is a single male. He has been homeless since the beginning of this year. He is currently unemployed but would like to find a part time job due to his disability. Josua has been through a lot this year and even though it was a tough year for him he would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. This Christmas Joshua would like a DVD player for him and his housemates so that they can enjoy their evenings by watching a movie together. (G13)

Tyler is a single male who is homeless and is in temporary housing. He is in need of affordable permanent housing due to disability. This Christmas Tyler would like some ingredients for a holiday meal that he wishes to provide for his house mates. (G14)
Josephina wants
a good book
Josephina is a single female who has been homeless since the beginning of the year due to her home state having bad financial status. Josephina is over coming some struggles and tribulations during this period but is still positive that she will get herself out of this and become more self sufficient. She moved here to get a better life. She has no relatives and is on fixed income. Josephina would like a good novel to read and possibly a phone card to stay in contact with friends and family. (G15)

Amber is a single mother of four children. Amber moved here to better her and her family’s life. Amber and her family are presently in temporary housing. The family is in need of affordable permanent housing. Erin would like new clothes for work. Amber would like to have a place to prepare a wonderful Christmas meal for her and her family. (G16)

young couple
Carly and Tucker are a young couple struggling to make ends meet. The family is presently homeless and has been blessed with temporary housing. Tucker is unemployed at the time but is currently job seeking. Carly is pregnant and has a daughter named Hilary, 7 months old, to care for. The family needs a permanent and affordable place to stay. This Christmas Tucker would like some new clothes so that he will be well dressed for future employment opportunities. Carly would like some new clothes also. Their daughter Hilary would love a toy doll. (G17)
Big family looking for holiday help
Brenda and Kendell were living in a tent on the beach. The couple has eight children. Due to having a big household, the family of 10 is having a difficult time finding housing. The family is homeless and presently staying in temporary housing. The family needs a permanent place to stay as soon as possible. Both Brenda and Kendell are having a difficult time finding employment due to the economy. They are highly qualified for any position and are open to any employment. (G18)
Food for elderly woman
Sophie is an 89-year-old woman who lives by herself. She is suffering from medical problems and is unable to shop for herself. She is getting home delivered meals. She has a caregiver who assists her in getting her groceries. Having a voucher for food and groceries would help in stocking up her pantry. It is also a big help if she can get help in getting new clothes this holiday season. (G19)
Couple needs a toaster, microwave
Jaime and Connie are an elderly couple who live by themselves and are receiving Social Security as their income. Jamie is suffering from a slight dementia and is receiving home-delivered meals. He is also suffering from medical problems like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and thyroid problems. A lot of their income goes to medical expenses. Jamie and Connie don’t have family support since their children live in other states. It would be of help to them if they can get a microwave and a toaster this Christmas so they can heat their leftover foods and toast their bread. (G20)
Daniella could use Ensure milk
Daniella is a 92-year-old woman who lives by herself. She lives on Social Security and little pension. She is suffering from slight dementia and sometimes refuses to eat. She drinks Ensure milk but this is too expensive for her to buy. This would benefit her health so she can enjoy the holidays. (G21)

brighten holidays
Donald and Jane are elderly couple who are currently on a fixed income. Donald used to work but he just had to go through surgery because of lung problems. Jane has been without a job for quite sometime now. With just the disability income that Donald Is receiving, they are having a hard time with their daily needs. They are greatly in need of food to brighten the holidays. (G22)
New clothes for Ellen
Ellen suffers from incontinence problems. She lives with a relative but most of the time she is by herself. She lives on a fixed income which is Social Security and pension. She needs help in buying adult diapers because she uses a lot of them. It would also be nice if she is given new clothes for the holidays. (G23)
Marci wants to make Christmas dinner
Marci is a widow so she now lives by herself. She is on fixed income through Social Security pension. She does not drive so it would bring her Christmas joy if she is able to prepare a nice dinner for herself and her grandchildren. (G24)
Tanya would like to host holiday gathering
Tanya is a homebound elderly woman who lives by herself. She does not drive and she is receiving home-delivered meals. She is getting Social Security as her income and doesn’t have extra money to purchase other extra items. Her holidays would be brightened if she were able to have a holiday gathering for her children. Help in getting the food for this gathering would go a long way in accomplishing this wish. (G25)
