PO‘IPU — Christmas for 50 children from the Koloa Elementary School will be a little brighter this year, courtesy of the associates from the Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club.
Nicolette Sahut was selected as the winner of the Waiohai’s third annual Christmas Decorating Contest, Friday, and collected the grand prize of the hand-made quilt by Cathy Veatch, the event chair.
“I only made one quilt this year,” Veatch said. “Last year, we ended up with three quilts.”
During the contest, associates get Christmas stockings provided by the resort and set about to fill the stockings and decorate them for judging.
“The names of the children were provided by the school and the associates received their angels simply as a male, or female in a certain age group,” said Jolene Ogle, named as the fourth place winner. “All of the items are donated and associates give what they feel like.”
Steve Yannarell, general manager of the Waiohai, said the stockings will be delivered to the school on Tuesday so the students get to enjoy their gifts for Christmas.
“Last year, we worked through the Catholic Charities and provided gift boxes for their clients,” Yannarell said. “This year, Catholic Charities is still hosting its program, but we thought we would try doing it on our own.”
Following Sahut, Dely Layaoen and Michelle Pascual filled in the second and third slots ahead of Ogle.
“The employees have so much fun doing this,” Veatch said. “And when all the stockings are displayed, they have fun talking and planning for next year’s project.”
