LIHU‘E — The Boys & Girls Club of Hawai‘i will be organizing youth basketball clinics at different locations on Kaua‘i, which will begin on Jan. 4 and run for 12 weeks.
Those individuals who wish to get involved will have the opportunity to learn basketball fundamentals in either Kapa‘a, Lihu‘e or Waimea. The program is free for all current members of the Boys & Girls Club of Hawai‘i. Those who are not yet members can complete a BGCH membership application for $1 and a birth certificate.
The sessions will divided up by age group for 7-9, 10-12 and 13-15.
Practices and games will take place twice a week after school, plus on Saturday mornings.
The club’s press release states that while the focus of the program will be on skills and drills, it will be guided by the philosophy of teaching physical skills, having youth learn about the positive qualities of sport, providing an opportunity for each participant’s success and having fun.
While BGCH staff will run the practices and games, they are looking for volunteers that will be able to serve as team moms, coaches and officials. Each Boys & Girls Club site will host a parents and coaches meeting from 6-7 p.m. on Wednesday. All coaches will be provided Positive Coaching Alliance training, as well as a basketball skills training manual.
For more information about the basketball program, contact Lovey Harper (Kapa‘a) at 821-4406, Michael Miranda (Lihu‘e) 632-0009 or Bernie Brown (Waimea) 338-1418.
