LIHU‘E — Kainoa Simao scored two touchdowns and an extra point, but the effort came up short for the Koloa Rams Junior Midgets in its 20-33 loss to the Pearl City Highland Colts, Saturday.
Blake Cooper and Dominic Maneafaiga each scored a pair of TDs to lead the Colts at the Mokihana Bowl which marked the end of the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League’s 2009 season.
The Colts, billed as a Division I team, lost little time asserting its offensive power against the Rams, billed as a Division II team, at the matchup played under clear skies and a warm sun.
Cooper peeled off a 45-yard scoring run early in the opening quarter and graced that touchdown by running in the point-after for a 7-0 lead with 8:21 showing in the period.
Maneafaiga opened the second quarter with a 16-yard dash at the 7:00 mark with Leon Talaro adding another touchdown, a 52-yard scamper down the sidelines at the 6:01 mark. Maneafiaga ran in the point-after for the 21-0 lead.
Koloa opened its scorebooks with 2:58 showing in the half when Kainoa Simao bulled through heavy traffic for a two-yard score with quarterback Kelson Andrade running in the point-after for the 21-7 halftime showing.
Cooper peeled off a 58-yard touchdown for the only score in the third period before Simao opened the final quarter with a one-yard score at the 6:49 mark.
The Colts answered when Maneafaiga scored his second TD, a 20-yard run on the ensuing series for the 33-13 lead with 5:11 remaining in the game.
Andrade broke open on a pass play to Kendall Rivera for a 28-yard score with just 1:53 remaining in the game. Another pass, this time to Simao, was good for the point-after and the 33-20 final score.
