LIHU‘E — Hanalei Pier is the destination for the Kaua‘i Hoe Wa‘a race on Sunday. The race is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. from Kalihiwai for both the short and long courses with the finish line at Hanalei Pier.

Engtry fee is $15 for Kaua‘i Hoe Wa‘a members and $25 for non KHW members with registration for the race to take place at Kalihiwai from 8 to 9 a.m.
This will be the second race of the 2009-2010 Kaua‘i Hoe Wa‘a season. The season started Nov. 21 with a race from Kuku‘iula to Port Allen for the short course and from the Marriott’s Waiohai Beach Club to Port Allen for the long course.
Less than two seconds separated the top three finishers of the OC-1 Open Men Long Course finishers as Mark Frazier completed the run on a 1:06:54 followed by Butch Keahiolalo (1:07:22) and Keone Miyake (1:08:32).
Patrick Fenwick topped the Short Course on a 56:36:00 paddle followed less than a minute later by Scott Hubbard of the Masters class following at 57:07:00.
Beth and Brian Carter, aboard an OC-2, topped the two-man with a 1:10:51 in the long course. Kenny Denton, the only surfski in the long course, finished fifth overall on a 1:08:32 run.
Alana Frazier-Goo topped the women in the long course on a 1:13:30, chased by Kristen Foster crossing at 1:14:04.
A spokesman for Kaua‘i Hoe Wa‘a said the scheduled Sunday race is based on safety, depending on weather conditions.
If there is a change because of weather conditions, it should be found on the Kaua‘i Hoe Wa‘a Web site, or by calling Tom at 652-0406 the night before the race.
Following the Kalihiwai to Hanalei race, the next race on the calendar is scheduled for Dec. 19 with the Long Course starting at Kalapaki Beach and ending at Po‘ipu. The Short Course is from Kuku‘iula to Port Allen.
The season ends with a North Shore race scheduled for April 11.
