LIHU‘E — The Department of Land and Natural Resources is set to hold an informational meeting about proposed improvements to the wastewater system at Ha‘ena State Park, according to a press release. The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at the Hanalei School cafeteria.
The project was initiated to address concerns that the existing wastewater system serving the park’s comfort station is affecting a culturally and archaeologically sensitive site in the park.
With the collaboration of several Ha‘ena community members, DLNR has designed a system utilizing a constructed wetlands method to enhance the treatment of the effluent and provide proper disposal into an area away from culturally sensitive areas.
The public meeting is being held in advance of the 30-day public comment period for the project’s Draft Environmental Assessment, to allow the community to learn more about the project’s history and how constructed wetland and native wetland plants can benefit water quality.
The Draft Environmental Assessment for this project will be available for public review after Dec. 8 at the Princeville library and online in the OEQC Environmental Notice at oeqc.doh.hawaii.gov. Comments will be accepted between Dec. 8 and Jan. 7, 2010.
