LIHU‘E — The KIF All-Stars for both cheerleading and cross country were announced Tuesday, though the cheerleaders were made aware of their feat at this weekend’s KIF championship competition.
Waimea High almost swept the All-Star team, with six of the seven names coming from the Menehune squad. Seniors Nelson Acosta and Aleina Emayo, juniors Rozaleah Palma and Casey Owen, sophomore Caitlin Gaspar and freshman Marissa Hesapene were named as All-Stars.
The seventh spot was for Kaua‘i High junior Tyra Lum.
Waimea managed to survive a costly fall in their championship competition routine and win the KIF title, Saturday.
The cross-country All-Star team was a much more balanced group, though the strength of the Kaua‘i High girls team was evident, as they had five of the nine All-Stars. Juniors Kendall Andersland and Christina Pearson, as well as sophomores Cinzia Bruno, Melissa Raisa Carlos and Ashley Schnackenberg represented the Red Raiders.
Kapa‘a junior Takara Kunioka and sophomore Tiare Welborn, along with Waimea senior Natasha Abadilla and freshman Ember Teter, the lone freshman in the group, rounded out the girls All-Stars.
On the boys side, Kapa‘a was the strong force they were throughout the season, also having five of the nine selectees. Juniors Riley Cox, Bradley Heiser, Brycen Phillips, sophomore Maximilian Drubba and freshman Micah Domingcil were all named from the Warriors’ squad.
Island School’s Pierce Murphy, a junior, was an obvious selection after dominating many of the boys cross-country events throughout the season. Murphy outpaced the field with impressive times in the KIF and also came in second place in the state at the HHSAA cross-country championships.
Kaua‘i High freshman Joshua Herr, Waimea junior Keone Mattos and Waimea sophomore Jonathan Tangalin completed the All-Star team.
