LIHU‘E — Courtney Brede, 15, has experienced life in a way few other teenagers have.
Brede was volunteering with the American Cancer Society group at the Saturday health fair celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Queen’s Medical Center, the Kaua‘i event coinciding with similar celebrations on Maui and the Big Island.
“She’s been through a lot,” an ACS volunteer said. “She’s had a kidney transplant, a heart transplant, and was a beneficiary for the Make A Wish Foundation.”
The healthy Kapa‘a High School student flashed a smile that effectively shielded her past when, as a beneficiary for the Make A Wish Foundation, her “wish” of meeting the stars of “The Young and the Restless” was granted.
“I think I’m going to be helping with a luncheon, Sunday, at the Make A Wish golf tournament hosted by the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa,” Brede, the poster child of the Make A Wish Foundation, said. “The tournament starts at 8 a.m., but I’m volunteering with the cancer society today, so I might start a little later tomorrow.”
Charlie Hiramoto, of the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course where the tournament was taking place, said turnout for the fundraiser was good with only one person being unable to make the starting time. He estimated about 120 golfers in the field.
In addition to providing guided tours through the inflatable colon that was set up at the health fair, Brede was promoting the upcoming ACS Relay for Life events, the event kick-off being celebrated Friday afternoon and overlapping with the nostalgic dance music of the Starlighters at the mall.
The all-night slumber parties will be held on April 24 at the Hanapepe Stadium and June 12 in Hanalei, said Mary Williamson of the ACS Kaua‘i Field Office. The final fundraiser for the ACS is the Hoedown for Hope scheduled for Oct. 2, 2010.
A holiday craft fair in the atrium area of the Hyatt, Tuesday, will also benefit the Make A Wish Foundation. The event, featuring locally made handcrafted creations with live entertainment will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
